MARQUETTE - With strong southwest winds, 17 Ensign sailboats crossed the start line on Aug. 1, taking only 10 minutes for the one-mile upwind leg.
After 2 laps, Lickety Split - steered by Jim Knape - took first place.
Jeff Millan aboard Man O War finished second, with third going to Dustin Frak on Black Boat.
The Ensign National Championship will be held Aug. 13-16 on Lake Superior in Marquette's Lower Harbor.
Opening ceremonies will be held on Sunday, at the Marquette Yacht Club.
