Miriam S. (Kari) Nicholls

ISHPEMING, MI. - Miriam S. (Kari) Nicholls, age 85, longtime resident of 131 Cooper Lake Rd., Ishpeming Twp. passed away on Thursday, August 2, 2012 at the Mather Nursing Center where she had resided since November of 2009.

Miriam was born January 12, 1927 in Black River Loc. (Humboldt Twp.), MI the daughter of the late Matt and Toini (Trygg) Kontio. She was a graduate of the Champion High School, Class of 1945. Miriam had a passion for cooking and baking and had made a career of cooking for local restaurants including Smitty's in Ishpeming, The Mather Inn and the 41 Steakhouse where she retired from in 1994. Miriam also enjoyed knitting and crocheting, along with caring for her indoor plants and bird watching in her spare time. She was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church.

Survivors include 4 children Dennis (Mary) Kari of Ishpeming, Mavis (John) Wiitanen of Champion, Paul (Gale) Kari of Ishpeming, and Shirley (John) Solomon of Ishpeming, 8 grandchildren Jaclyn (Chris) Kangas, Troy (Tracie) Wiitanen, Kristy (Henry) Bass, Ryan (Jenny) Wiitanen, Scott Haroski, Kevin (Cathy) Kari, Brad (Jackie) Solomon and Gerald Dugger, 13 great grandchildren, who were her pride and joy Kyle & Kaitlyn Kangas, Hayley & Alexis Bass, Collin, Garrett, and Makenna Wiitanen, Dylan Solomon, Tyler Solomon, Lilyan Kari, Emma, Carson and Maya Wiitanen along with numerous nieces and nephews both here and in Finland. She was preceded in death by her 1st husband Toivo Kari, her 2nd husband James Nicholls, a daughter Betty Dugger, 2 grandsons Bryan Kari and Daryl Solomon, along with 4 sisters and 6 brothers.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 10am 12 Noon on Monday, August 6, 2012 at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Ishpeming. Funeral services will follow at 12:00 Noon on Monday at the Bethel Lutheran Church with the Rev. Lauri O. Maki to officiate. Interment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery. A luncheon will follow the services in the church hall.

Pallbearers will be her grandchildren, with honorary pallbearers being Christopher Kangas, Hank Bass and her nephew Marvin Niemi.

Memorials may be directed to the Bethel Lutheran Church in Miriam's memory.
