To the Journal editor:
On Aug. 7, a primary election will be held to determine the candidates in the Republican and Democratic parties who will compete in November for the open position in the 109th district of the Michigan House of Representatives. The seat is currently held by Steve Lindberg, who is retiring.
We, as former mayors of the city of Marquette, urge all voters to cast their ballot in the Democratic Primary for John Kivela.
Mr. Kivela has been an extremely effective leader for the City of Marquette and is deserving of the consideration of all voters regardless of party.
He is a fiscal conservative, a builder, and a very creative thinker. His ability to take on and finish projects, especially delayed road construction and the complex development of Founders Landing and to balance budgets in hard times, speaks for itself.
We hope you get a chance to meet and talk with him during the campaign. Please vote for John Kivela in the Aug.7 primary.
