To the Journal editor:
Dear Mr. Scram, on July 24, The Mining Journal published a rather lengthy letter from you supporting Cathy Church's candidacy for Marquette County Probate Judge.
On the same day, the Upper Peninsula Children's Coalition, the American Association of University Women, the Great Lakes Center for Youth Development, and the National Alliance on Mental Illness sponsored a candidate forum.
All five candidates for probate judge were invited. All indicated they would attend. Five minutes before the event began, the organizers were informed that Ms. Church would not be attending, and she did not in fact attend.
The first question all candidates were asked was when they last appeared in probate court or in a family division case assigned to the Probate Judge. Since Ms. Church was not present to answer that question, I will answer it for her.
Her last appearance in probate court was in 2006, six years ago.
Your letter, and some of her advertising, suggests she has extensive experience in probate court cases. That may once have been true, but has not been for some time.
Michael Anderegg, judge
Marquette County Probate Court
