Alger County Fair set for this weekend in Chatham

CHATHAM - The Alger County Fair returns to the Rock River Township Park in Chatham this weekend with a scheduled packed with fun activities.

The three-day fair opens to the public at 9 a.m. Friday and closes at 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission to the fair is $5 for adults (for all three days); $3 for children (for all three days); $2 daily for adults (anyone ages 13 and above); $1 daily for children (6-12 years of age); free admission for children (ages 5 and under).

Before the fair begins, early registration will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday. Thursday will be entry day from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m., with rabbit and poultry entries free pullorum testing from 3 to 5 p.m.

The Alger County Fair and Chatham Lions Homecoming have combined their events.

"We live in a unique area of Michigan and the purpose of the fair has always been to reflect the many ways we live, work and play here in Alger County and the Upper Peninsula," the two groups said in a joint statement. "During the weekend, each group will continue to provide their own programs and more; all at the same place and time."

Some of the highlights of the events scheduled include:

Friday: 9 a.m., fair opens; youth and open livestock judging and showing begins; swine; 10 a.m., goats and sheep; 11 a.m. dairy cattle; noon, beef cattle; 1 p.m., horse speed events; 5:30 p.m., Grandparent of the Year Competition; 6 p.m., Little Miss Alger County Competition ($5 contestant entry fee); 6:30 p.m. co-ed softball and bean bag tournaments.

Saturday: 8:30 a.m., fair opens; 9 a.m., horse show pleasure class; 10 a.m., rabbit and poultry judging; 4-H activities in the Youth Building until 4 p.m.; noon, dog demonstrations at ballfield; 12:30 p.m., scavenger hunt; 1 p.m., Great Bean Cook-Off judging (registration at 12:30 p.m.); 2 p.m., Chatham Homecoming Parade; 3 p.m., co-ed softball and bean bag tournaments; 3 p.m., antique tractor pull; 4 p.m., draft horse and mule show; 5 p.m., annual pig roast (adults $7; 12 and under, $5; seniors, $6; limit of 300 tickets to be sold); 7:30 p.m., homecoming queen crowning.

Sunday: 8 a.m., fair opens; 10 a.m., classic car display begins; co-ed softball and bean bag tournaments; registration for team penning and the miniature horse show; 11 a.m., miniature horse show; 11:30 a.m.,, homecoming chicken barbecue; 11 a.m., team penning; 1 p.m., firefighter contest; 3 p.m., People's Choice Award Classic Cars, greased pig contest; 5 p.m., fair closes.
