MARQUETTE - Northern Michigan University women's indoor and outdoor head track and field coach Tom Barnes will announce his retirement on today, according to a source with the team.

Barnes joined the Wildcats track and field team as an assistant during the program's first year back in 2003 and was promoted to head coach in 2007.

Prior to NMU, Barnes was the head track and field coach at Father Marquette Middle School.

NMU finished 20th this outdoor season in the NCAA Division II Championships and fourth in the GLIAC.

Three Wildcats earned All-American status under Barnes in 2012, including senior high jumper Bailey Franklin, redshirt freshman triple jumper Sherice Hewett and sophomore pole vaulter Jamie Roberts of Iron Mountain.

The Wildcats were ranked as high as No. 14 during the indoor season with Franklin, Hewett and Roberts earning indoor All-American honors.

According to information provided by the source, a search for a new head coach will begin immediately following Barnes' announcement.
