BLAINE, Minn. - A 3-2 loss to the HFC United of Hastings, Minn., on Friday ended the Marquette Wave 98 girls soccer team's quest for the 2012 Schwan's USA Cup.
Hastings jumped out to a 2-0 lead, scoring twice in the first 14 minutes. But Marquette's Casey Durand notched her sixth goal of the tourney, with Sydney Higgins assisting, to narrow the gap to 2-1 in the match's 15th minute.
The Minnesota squad added a late goal for a 3-1 halftime lead.
Team spokesman Dave Danis said the Wave 98 squad spent most of the second half in the offensive zone, generating numerous quality scoring chances.
In the 18th minute, forward Durand took a pass from Mikayla Blight and beat the Hastings keeper to lose the deficit to 3-2.
The Wave squad kept the pressure on the rest of the way, but was unable to get the equalizer.
Earlier, the Wave 98 girls bounced back with consecutive victories after losing their opening game in Cup play.
The latest win was 5-1 over the Lakes United Eagles of Lindstrom, Minn., on Thursday.
The Wave took the lead in the game's second minute on a goal by Amber Huebner, her first of the tournament.
Then in the 10th minute, teammate Higgins battled through heavy traffic in front of the Eagles' goal and put the ball in for a 2-0 advantage.
Late in the first half, the Wave's Durand notched a goal as Marquette led 3-0 at halftime.
In the second half, the Minnesota squad scored its lone goal in the 11th minute, but Durand and Huebner each got their second goal of the game for the final margin.
Huebner added an assist. Teammate Mikayla Blight recorded three assists, Madi Rieboldt added one and Molly Gaudreau got the win in the Wave goal.
In the tourney, Durand let all Marquette scores with seven goals. Blight added five assists while Huebner posted two goals and two assists.
