Rochester advances to semifinals of U.P. ladies tourney

MANISTIQUE - Avery Rochester moved one step closer Wednesday to an Upper Peninsula Ladies Golf Association title.

Rochester, a golfer out of Wawonowin Country Club in Ishpeming who will be a senior at Marquette Senior High School this fall, advanced to today's semifinals by beating Pam Frankini of Iron Mountain 9 and 8 in match play at the Indian Lake Golf Course in Manistique.

Rochester was scheduled to tee off against Cathy Shamion of Ontonagon at 8:30 a.m. Shamion topped Judy LeValley of Menominee 5 and 4 Wednesday.

In the other semifinal today, JoAnn Poncino of Iron Mountain was set to meet Polly Anderson of Ironwood.

Poncino dropped Jackie Villemure of Indian Lake 4 and 3, while Anderson shaded recent Calumet graduate Zoe Woodworth, 1-up.

Woodworth was 2-up after 16 holes, but Anderson won the next two holes and prevailed in sudden death.

The championship match is scheduled for 1 p.m. today.
