Members of the Western Federation of Miners held a meeting June 8, 1913, at the Calumet Theatre to discuss possible strike action. A public presentation about events leading up to the 1913 Michigan Copper Miners' Strike will be offered on Tuesday at Michigan Tech.
Scholar to speak on 1913 strike
HOUGHTON - The Michigan Tech Archival Speaker Series will feature visiting scholar Aaron Goings, Ph.D., at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the East Reading Room of the Van Pelt and Opie Library at Michigan Technological University. Goings will examine labor history in Michigan's Copper Country, focusing on working conditions, labor unions and labor struggles in the years leading up to the 1913 Michigan Copper Miners' Strike.

Messiah offers Stepping Stones
MARQUETTE - Families with children age 10 and younger are invited to a summer program called Stepping Stones Family Play Group, sponsored by Messiah Lutheran Church. The program will run from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Thursday at William's Park on Ohio Street in Marquette. This program is free of charge however, a suggested donation of $5 per family will be accepted.
All children need to have a care provider with them. Preregistration is appreciated. In the case of inclement weather or extreme high temperatures, the group will meet at Messiah Lutheran Church.

Group to read Christie mystery
MARQUETTE - Readers Theater will hold a reading of "The Mousetrap" by Agatha Christie, at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Peter White Public Library Shiras Room.
Readers Theater is a group of adults, who are interested in drama and are willing and able to read a scripted role. They meet on the third Thursday of each month to read plays for enjoyment.
