NEGAUNEE, Mich. - Richard D. "Dick" Carlson, 85, of 98 Croix St., Negaunee, died at 4:05 a.m. on Tuesday, July 10, 2012 at the Eastwood Nursing Center where he had been a patient since May 17, 2012.

Richard was born December 4, 1926 in Negaunee to Carl W. and Violet M. (Johnson) Carlson and attended Negaunee St. Paul High School.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of WWII. Following his service to his country, he returned to St. Paul High and graduated with the Class of 1947. He worked as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 30 years, retiring in 1985.

Mr. Carlson was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Negaunee, was a life member of the V.A. Romo Post #3165 V.F.W. of Negaunee, and was a member and Past Exalted Ruler of the Negaunee Elks Lodge.

Surviving are his wife of nearly 65 years, Marie C. (Foisie), 1 son, Richard (Brenda) Carlson of Gulf Shores, AL, 2 daughters: Karen (Art) Collins of Negaunee, Joette (Roger) Holman of Palmer, 6 grandchildren: Tracy Gough, Brian Carlson, Keith (Kristin) Collins, Kelly (Chris) Diekvoss, Nichole (Bill) Munson, Heather (Brett) Sandstrom, 11 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandson, 5 brothers: Robert (Carol) Carlson of Negaunee, Philip (Mavis) Carlson of Negaunee, Neil (Marjorie) Carlson of Marquette, Roger Carlson of Gwinn, James (Diane) Carlson of Negaunee, numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers: infant Carl W. and Kenneth W. Carlson.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 noon on Monday, July 16 at St. Paul Catholic Church with Monsignor Peter Oberto officiating. Interment will be in the Negaunee Cemetery. The family will greet relatives and friends from 10:30 a.m. until the time of services at 12:00 noon at the church and at a reception in the St. Paul Gym following the service on Monday.
