RUDYARD - An elderly Chippewa County man died Friday after he was struck by a vehicle in Rudyard.

Chippewa County Sheriff Robert Savoie said Max Martin Mackie, 87, of Rudyard died at War Memorial Hospital after suffering multiple injuries in the crash.

The accident occurred at about 6 p.m. Friday along the Mackinac Trail in Rudyard.

According to police, Mildred Grace Forgrave, 88, of Rudyard was driving a vehicle south along Mackinac Trail when she observed two bicycles, one on each side of the roadway, traveling in the same direction that she was.

Police said she slowed down and drove on the centerline to make her way safely between the bicycles.

Police said suddenly, Mackie attempted to cross the road without looking and he was struck by Forgrave's vehicle. He struck the windshield on impact.

Forgrave and a passenger received minor injuries and were taken by private vehicle to the hospital for treatment, police said.

Deputies said no tickets were issued and the accident remains under investigation.
