MUNISING - Two downstate residents are expected to be arraigned Monday in Alger County District Court after being arrested earlier this week at a state rest area east of AuTrain for alleged possession of heroin.
The suspects lodged in the Alger County Jail include a 47-year-old male from Walled Lake and a 27-year-old female from Farmington Hills.
At 6:45 p.m. Wednesday, deputies from the Alger County Sheriff's Department received a complaint of a driver possibly operating a vehicle while intoxicated. The driver was reported to be at the state rest area along the north side of M-28, which is situated across from Scott Falls.
At the scene, police were provided of a description of the male and female occupants, who had exited the vehicle. Deputies located the two and talked with them. Police said they both appeared to be under the influence of a controlled substance.
In a news release, deputies said both of the suspects were arrested for possession of heroin. Police said they searched the vehicle and allegedly found more heroin, syringes and a handgun.
Police were withholding the names of the suspects pending their arraignments. The rest area is located in AuTrain Township.
