Vernon D. “Doug” Hammond

BIG BAY, MI. - Vernon Douglas "Doug" Hammond, age 64, of County Road KK, Big Bay, entered eternal life Sunday, July 1, 2012 at his home.

Doug was born May 25, 1948 in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, graduated from school there, and served in the US Marine Corps during the Vietnam Era. He first visited the Big Bay area in the 1970's, returning in 1996. On October 13, 1996 he married Norma (Picard) Stephenson and together they made their home in Big Bay. Norma preceded him in death on February 9, 2007. Throughout the years, Doug worked as a maintenance man at Perkins Park, Bay Cliff Health Camp, and the Huron Mountain Club. Doug was a member of the Community Presbyterian Church, the Big Bay Sportsman's Club, and the National Rifle Association. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, guns, family barbeques, and doing all sorts of side jobs. He especially loved any chance to spend time with his grandchildren and visiting with his mother.

Doug is survived by his mother and step-father, Blanch and Ernest "Berk" Moody of Elizabeth City, NC; his father, Roy Hammond; step-daughters, Amanda (Mark) Beerman of Big Bay, Leticia (Steve) Murk of Marquette, and Shawna (Porter) MacGregor of Norway; step-son, Josh (Suzette) Stephenson of Big Bay; grandchildren, Annie, Elizabeth, and Joe Beerman, Michael and Kylee Appleton, Aidan Welker, and Rocky Murk; brothers, Phillip Michael and Vincent Tod Hammond of North Carolina, and Leon Hammond of Virginia; step-brother, David Edwin Moody of Florida; an aunt, Doris Maillet of North Carolina; a special cousin, Joyce Saundurs of North Carolina; his mother-in-law, Gladys (Robert) Trickett of Ishpeming; special friends, Bill Long of North Carolina, and Leon Gibson, Dennis Boe, Wayne Fisher, and Skip Gustafson all of Big Bay.
