GWINN, Mich. - Marie E. Martonen, 93, of Gwinn, died peacefully Tuesday evening, June 26, 2012, at the Mather Nursing Center in the loving presence of her niece, Patty Ghiringhelli.
Miss Martonen was born on March 16, 1919 at Austin Location, a daughter of the late Thomas and Eveliina (Krekila) Martonen.
Marie hitch-hiked to Detroit at the age of 18 and worked in the Detroit area until the late '50s, returning to Gwinn to care for her mother.

She worked in Civil Service at the former K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base for over 20 years before retiring.
Marie was proud of her Finnish heritage and the fact that she shared the same birthday with St. Urho. She had a lot of SISU and enjoyed many canine friends over the years.
In her free time, Marie enjoyed going to the casino, Bingo, playing her lottery tickets, and enjoying family get-togethers. She was a member of the Gwinn Cribbage League for over 40 years.
Marie was fondly known as "Aunt Marie" to many besides her nieces and nephews.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews including, Jack (Nancy) Martonen of Oconto, WI, Patricia (Peter) Ghiringhelli of Gwinn, Cathy Martonen of Marquette, William Martonen of Gwinn, Marianne (Bobby May) Martonen of Latham, OH, Gary Martonen, Sharon (Rick) Greig, Caroline (Bob) Haslett, and Marty (Bill) Jennings all living on the West Coast. Also surviving are several great nieces and nephews; a sister-in-law, Lila Martonen of Salmon, ID and dear friends, Helen Barrett and Karen Octaluk, both of Gwinn. Preceding her in death besides her parents was a sister, Ina (John) Brunetto and three brothers, Neilo, Shubert and Everett Martonen.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 6th at 3 p.m. in the Canale-Gwinn Funeral Home with the Rev. Peter Andersen of Grace Lutheran Church officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Friday. Burial will take place in the Gwinn Cemetery.
