NEWBERRY - Ishpeming's Blue Storm opened its portion of the Newberry Tournament Saturday with an 8-1 triumph over the host baseball team.
Sawyer Fisher, Josh Richards and Blake Strother led an 11-hit Ishpeming attack with two safeties apiece. Richards knocked in two runs.
The Blue Storm scored twice in the first and three runs in the second to take control.
Hurler Fisher fanned six in six innings of work.
Friday, the Blue Storm dropped a pair of American Legion baseball games to the Monroe (Ida) Lightning in Marquette, 16-5 in six innings and 10-4.
Ishpeming led 4-1 after the first inning of the opener, but the Lightning scored four runs in the fifth inning and six in the sixth to put the game away.
Richards started on the mound for Ishpeming and fanned five. Jarrett Davidson, who knocked in a run, came on in relief.
In the second contest, Zach Niemi produced four hits and Gunnar Meyer knocked in a pair of runs with two doubles, but it wasn't enough for the Blue Storm, which led 3-2 after three frames.
Strother pitched four innings for Ishpeming, striking out three.
