MUNISING, MI. - Audrey Marie Dolaski, age 89, passed away at her home we call, Audrey's Garden on Thursday, June 28, 2012.
Audrey was born July 4th, 1922 to Henry & Berdina (Hawkins) Braatz and has lived all her life near her beloved Lake Superior. Audrey left home at 14 to live and work at the Beach Inn she thrived under the care and guidance of Charles and Almeda Everett and her dear friend Irene. Audrey worked at the Beach Inn and later the Red Cedar Restaurant. She then retired, which didn't last long before she returned to work at The Dogpatch Restaurant, which she enjoyed very much and attributed to keeping her young. She worked there well into her 70's when she did admit to being a little tired and wanted to enjoy her home and garden. She enjoyed working at the Dogpatch meeting all the customers and the young people that worked there over the years; she did miss working but continued to make her soup at home. Audrey was an excellent 'cook' and took great pride in her creations both at home and work.
After he returned from WWII Audrey married the love of her life, Paul Dolaski. Paul was a kind and loving man. They had one daughter: Trudy Lee. They spent their time on picnics and driving every back road of the neighboring counties. The idea was to arrive home without a 'main' road. They enjoyed the wild life and the beauty of Upper Michigan. Their life was simple and full and filled with nature.
Audrey led a very busy life, working, enjoying time hiking with Irene Van Landschoot, they spent many hours all year round walking along the shores of Lake Superior and Grand Island, a little ice and bad weather never stopped them. Audrey never felt at home to far from 'Lake Superior' or Munising.
Audrey was a lifelong member of the United Presbyterian Church, and a member of The Daughters of the American Revolution. Audrey's family (the Hawkins/Estella Foster) ancestors helped settle America and took part in both the Civil and Revolutionary Wars), she was very proud and enjoyed her family history.
Audrey is survived by her daughter Trudy Lee Kennedy Darman, her son in law Hal Darman, 3 grandchildren, Michael (Heidi Gerkhardt, Samantha & Travis Champine), Christina Marie, Conor Joseph, a step daughter Tracy Darman Pillar (Robert) and two great-grandchildren Riley Ann & Jack Pillar, one brother Howard Olmsted, sister-in law and close friend Ann Graves of Munising & Josephine Blank of Munising. Nieces Beverly Lewis and Carol Jean Hathaway and many other nieces and nephews and close friends including the family of Irene VanLandschoot, Karin Madigan, Billy Ramsey & Rod DesJardins. Audrey is also survived by her dear friend and caregiver, Mike Laposky. Without Mike she would not have been able to live the later part of her life as she wished, in Audrey's Garden. Our family will be forever grateful for his care of her and her home.
Her beloved husband Paul preceded her in death in 1987, as did Paul's parents Mary & Joseph Dolaski; her parents Henry & Berdina Braatz, her step father Russell Boogren, her brothers Edward, Henry, Everett, & Lloyd Braatz, her sisters Margaret, Edna Braatz and her beloved little sister Marion & her husband Billy Oas and their son Edward. In addition: Michael R. Kennedy, son-in-law, Irene VanLandschoot, life long friend & sister-in-law Dorothy Henriksen.
Audrey lived a life filled with challenges; she met them, faced them and carried on with the great sense of pride and dignity that defined her. Audrey had a life lived well. We will miss her.
