WHITEFISH POINT (AP) - Michigan State Police report a diver died Monday while exploring a shipwreck in Lake Superior off Chippewa County.
State police divers recovered the body of 52-year-old Derril Yerigan of New Richmond, Wis., on Tuesday.
According to a news release, charter boat captain Brian Anderson of Frost, Minn., reported that one of four recreational divers failed to return Monday after exploring the wreckage of the SS Samuel Mather.
The shipwreck lies in 174 feet of water about 16 miles off Whitefish Point in the eastern Upper Peninsula.
The Chippewa County medical examiner's office is conducting an autopsy to determine what killed Yerigan. Police said foul play is not suspected.
