INDIAN RIVER, MI. - Richard (Dick) E. Parkkonen, 78, of Indian River, died Thursday, June 14, 2012 at Hospice House in Cheboygan.
There will be no service or visitation at this time.
Dick was born September 16, 1933 in Covington, MI. He was the son of Arne and Ailie (Takala) Parkkonen. He grew up in Negaunee and graduated from Negaunee High School. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Northern Michigan University.
On March 27, 1965 he married the former Ruby Gove in Birmingham, MI. After a period of moving the couple settled in Indian River where they raised their family. Dick was employed as a teacher at Inland Lakes Schools for nineteen years.
He retired in 1987. During retirement Dick worked part time at Citizens National Bank in Indian River.
Dick loved the out of doors and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He enjoyed woodworking and repairing small engines. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Indian River and a former member of the Indian River Lions Club.
He is survived by his wife, Ruby; children, Karen Parkkonen of Stevenson, WA and Warren Parkkonen of Indian River; brother, Miles Parkkonen of Negaunee; several nieces and nephews. Dick was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Arne "Bill" Parkkonen and his sisters, Ann, Lillian and Helen.
