Clarification offered

June 20, 2012
The Mining Journal

To the Journal editor:

I regret that the comments attributed to me in the June 14 article "Fueling Retaliation," were wrongly applied to the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community as a whole, or any other native Americans. My comments were directed to one individual.

However, it is important that we stay focused on the issue of free and fair competition, which is what we are fighting for. The sale of tax-free gas and tax-free cigarettes hurts us all, local family-owned gas stations and our entire state.

Without this critical revenue, it is important to understand that education and health care programs will suffer, as will those who depend on them. We live with harsh economic realities every day, and equal treatment for all is the fairest way to solve this collective concern.

I only ask for fair and equitable treatment for all local gas stations that will not threaten the health, education, and livelihoods of people across our city, township, our county, and our state.
