GWINN, Mich. - Stephen R. Lonergan, 61, of Gwinn, died Sunday afternoon, June 10, 2012, at Marquette General Hospital.
He was born March 2, 1951, in Mason City, Iowa, a son of Roland and Grace (Engals) Lonergan and was raised there, graduating from Newman High School in 1969.
Stephen enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and was a veteran of Vietnam and Desert Storm. He retired as a Master Sergeant after 24 years of service when his last duty station, K.I. Sawyer AFB closed.

He married the former Lindia Stanfill in Gwinn in 1974, and she survives him. Stephen earned an Associate Degree in criminal justice from NMU and was employed as a corrections officer at the Alger Correctional Facility.
He was a member of the VFW Post 5670 in Gwinn and the Little Lake American Legion Post 349. His interests included hunting and fishing.
Stephen is survived by his wife, Lindia Lonergan of Gwinn; mother, Grace Lonergan of Mason City, IA; children, Chip Sortor of Azle, TX, Yvette Sortor Robinson of Azle, TX, Tabb Lonergan of Novi, MI, and Cash (Ariel Grear) Lonergan of Houston, TX; sister, Kathy (Gaylan) Willert of Rochester, MN; grandchildren, Jared, David, Austin, Michael, Hannah, Addison, Roxann, Harleyann and Chad; 4 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, three aunts and three uncles.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, June 23, 2012, from 10 a.m. to noon in the Canale-Gwinn Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at Noon in the funeral home. Interment will take place in the Gwinn Cemetery.
