To the Journal editor:
On Monday the Marquette City Commission will consider whether to rescind a user fee increase the commission voted in earlier this year for Superiorland Soccer's use of three fields at the Kaufman Sports Complex.
The user fee increase is from $60 per team to $115 per team, which results in annual cost increase of $3,850 pert year.
Superiorland Soccer believes this increase is unreasonable and unfair when considering that Superiorland Soccer has helped raise over $1 million of cash and in-kind contributions in two projects, one being the three new soccer fields and the other the beautiful pavilion at the Kaufman Sports Complex.
Moreover, since the soccer fields were built 10 years ago, the city has already increase the user fee from $50 to $60 per team and imposed a new game fee. The jump from $60 to $115 per team would be a third increase.
Superiorland Soccer is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Our coaches and board members are unpaid volunteers. We believe that most city residents prefer a small portion of their tax dollars to be spent on youth sports, not just new roads and land acquisitions.
Youth sports such as soccer, baseball, hockey, football, basketball and others help keep our youth off the streets.
Please share your views with the city commission.
