At GSA, the scandals just keep coming

Where we stand

Some officials at the U.S. General Services Administration seem to think piling outrage upon outrage is the appropriate response to scandal.

Earlier this year it was learned dozens of GSA officials misspent more than $1 million in taxpayers' money on a lavish "conference" near Las Vegas. Then videos featuring GSA employees bragging about waste surfaced.

Now it has been learned that since 2008, the agency handed out more than $1 million in bonuses to employees under investigation for misconduct. One collected $76,000 in cash attaboys during a five-year period.

A Senate investigation found at least 84 GSA employees received bonuses while they were being investigated.

The GSA's reaction to lawmakers finding out about the bonuses was that a "top-to-bottom review" is being conducted.

Uh-huh. And once it is completed it will be back to business as usual at the GSA. Upset lawmakers will forget about the scandal just as soon as the headlines change.

But they shouldn't.
