MANISTIQUE - Manistique Public Safety officers have identified a Manistique woman who was killed in a fatal forklift accident early today at Manistique Papers in Manistique.

Police said Debbie L. Carlson, 53, died in the accident. She was an employee of the paper mill for 32 years.

Manistique Public Safety Director Ken Golat said in a news release that officers were dispatched to the mill at 1:28 a.m., where they "determined that the victim had sustained fatal injuries and was obviously deceased."

Police said officers conducted an on-scene investigation into the cause of the accident. There were no other paper mill employees or other persons involved or injured in the accident.

"The accident occurred when Carlson was operating a forklift, moving paper bales in the outside storage area of the mill," Golat said. "In the process of moving the bales, the forklift rolled on its side, crushing Carlson, who died instantly."

A separate investigation into the accident is being conducted by the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Funeral arrangements for Carlson are incomplete and are being arranged by the Carlson family and the Messier-Broullire Funeral Home in Manistique.
