ISHPEMING - The Ishpeming Public Schools Board of Education will hold a special meeting this evening to discuss a purchase agreement for the former C.L. Phelps Middle School building.
The board will meet at 5 p.m. at the Ishpeming High School library.
The only item on the board's agenda is a purchase agreement with G.A. Haan Development for the purchase of the former school building. The developer has expressed interest in the building for a low- to moderate-income apartment project using the state's low income housing tax credit.
Superintendent Stephen Piereson said the purchase would be conditional, requiring the zoning of the property changed to multiple-family residential and G.A. Haan to secure the tax credit it needs for the project.
The discussion of changing the property zoning - and the housing project itself - has stirred up some controversy at recent Ishpeming City Council and Ishpeming Planning Commission meetings.
