:MARQUETTE - Northern Michigan University announced this afternoon that president Les Wong will be leaving to take the helm at San Francisco State University later this year.
Wong will become the university's 13th president.
"I am extremely honored to take the leadership of one of the gems of the California state system," said Wong in a press release. "My years in service to Northern Michigan University and to the Upper Peninsula will not be forgotten. Northern's magic is special and Phyllis and I are fortunate to have been a part of its evolution."
David Haynes has been appointed to take Wong's place, becoming NMU's 14th president.
"It is a privilege to have been selected as president by the NMU Board of Trustees and to have the opportunity to serve my alma mater in this capacity," Haynes said in a press release.
Haynes has been professionally affiliated with NMU for 27 years in various capacities. He has served as an adviser to five presidents, special adviser to Wong on public policy and member of the president's cabinet. Haynes has been an associate professor of political science and public administration for the past six years and directs the Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree program. He also is co-director of the NMU Center for Rural Community and Economic Development and chair of the faculty senate graduate programs committee.
In addition to a bachelor's degree from NMU, Haynes holds a juris doctorate from the Thomas M. Cooley School of Law.
According to information from SFSU's web site, six presidential candidates were interviewed April 19, some of whom were advanced to the university's Board of Trustees, which met earlier this month, for further consideration.
The names of the applicants were kept confidential to ensure a "strong, highly competitive applicant pool," according to the site.
Wong will begin working in his new position at the helm of SFSU on Aug. 1
