APPLETON - Heavy rains and flooded fields on Day 2 of the Fox Cities Classic soccer tournament in Appleton, Wis. denied the FC Marquette Red Bulls a shot at the U11 title.
The Red Bulls were awarded second place behind the team they were set to face in the finals, the Middleton White Rush, before tournament officials called off all games.
In Game 1, the Red Bulls beat the Middleton Black Rush 6-1 after a 0-0 firts half. Nicolaas Vermaat posted the first half shutout in net while Soren Higgins handled the second half net duties.
Vermaat got the scoring started with an assist from Theo Kumpula. Brendan McCoy then found the net with an assist from Vermaat and Trevor Salmon. Salmon notched two goals of his own, both assisted by Drew Wyble. Evan Phillips also scored twice. Phillips goals were assisted by Hunter Sides and Ryan Baldwin.
In Game 2, the Red Bulls came out strong with two goals from Salmon. McCoy assisted the first goal and the second was unassisted. Phillips scored in the second half and was assisted by Hunter Sides. Wyble finished the scoring with an unassisted long ball from near the left touchline after coming up the field from the defensive position. Higgins had a shutout in net in the first half and Salmon took the net duties in the second half.
The Red Bulls travel to Traverse City on May 19 for the Cherry Capitol Cup and hold a 6-2-3 record.
