IRON MOUNTAIN - After seeing his team win only two matches last season, Westwood High School boys tennis coach Chris Jackson was looking for a sign Tuesday his 2012 Patriots' squad was improved.
He got his wish.
Winning two of three matches that went to three sets, Westwood opened its season with a 6-2 win over host Iron Mountain.
"It was important to get off to a good start after only winning twice last season," Jackson said.
"Both teams were evenly matched, with the meet decided by three, three-set matches."
At No. 1 singles, Andrew LeSage of Westwood knocked off Ty Thomann, 6-3, 6-4. Also, the Patriots got three-set victories at No. 2 singles and No. 3 doubles.
At second singles, Jarrett Davidson outlasted the Mountaineers' Josh Beauchamp, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3; at No. 3 doubles, the Patriots' Quinn Leroy and Derek Wing bested Albert Tomasson-Nick Cecconi, 6-2, 1-6, 6-3.
"We're much more athletic and have quality depth in our lineup compared to last season," Jackson said.
