MSHS JV girls soccer team wins first of season

MARQUETTE - The Marquette Senior High School JV girls soccer team defeated Houghton-Hancock 3-0 for its first win this season at home on Saturday afternoon.

Laura Slavsky assisted on a goal each half as the team travels to Waupaca, Wis., for a tournament on Saturday.

Lizzie Kurin opened the scoring for the Redettes, followed by an unassisted goal by Mikayla Blight to give MSHS a 2-0 halftime advantage.

Emma Kaznowski rounded out the scoring with a goal about midway through the second half.

Julia Janowski was in the Marquette goal and posted a shutout, making four saves.

Her teammates peppered their visitors with 27 shots, about 15 on net, according to coach Ross Daniels.

Red Bulls '00 take third at Superior Dome

MARQUETTE - The FC Marquette Red Bulls '00 under-12 team won two of three games to finish in third place at the Superior Dome Soccer Tournament last weekend.

The Red Bulls opened by beating M&M Shooters, 5-1 as Kahleb Federau, Thayer Yates, Brenden Lindgren, Ben Noble and Eli Pickard scored. Two assists were credited to Zac Holm while Federau had one. Riley Lindberg made two first-half saves and Kyle Michelson three in the second half.

In the next game, the Red Bulls lost 2-1 to Allouez, Wis., Stampede-White as Yates scored, Caleb Byma got the assist and Lindberg made 12 saves.

Marquette got back to its winning ways with a 5-0 victory over the Ashwaubenon, Wis., Storm. Eli Pickard scored two goals and Federau, Michelson and Ethan Martysz had one apiece. Two assists went to Lindgren and one each to Pickard and Martysz. Lindberg made two first-half saves and Ben Noble six in the second half.

Red Bulls '01 take second at Superior Dome

The FC Marquette Red Bulls '01 boys soccer team finished as runners-up in their division at the Superior Dome Soccer Tournament over the weekend to improve to 4-2-3.

The Red Bulls opened with a 4-1 victory over the Bayside Sharpshins, overcoming a 1-0 halftime deficit. Trevor Salmon, who worked in the Marquette net in the first half, scored twice after intermission, while teammates Brendan McCoy and Shane McEacharn also scored. Assists went to McCoy, Salmon, Nicolaas Vermaat, who posted a shutout in net during the second half, Drew Wyble, Ander Sorensen and Ivan Bannan.

The Red Bulls followed with a 3-0 win over Big Apple Bagels of Petoskey, again getting all their goals after halftime. Salmon and Vermaat split netminding duties as McEacharn, McCoy and Hunter Sides scored and Salmon (twice) and McCoy had assists.

The Howard Hurricanes scored a 3-0 win in what proved to the championship game between the top two teams in the tournament. Vermaat played throughtout in net and Wyble had a solid performance on defense.

Next up for the Red Bulls is a tournament in Appleton, Wis., on May 5.

The Ricky Graves and Dan Salmon-coached Red Bulls travel to Appleton on May 5th for their next tournament.
