MARQUETTE - A trip to the 2012 University National Championships in Oklahoma City, Okla., paid off for two U.S. Olympic Education Center freestyle wrestlers over the weekend.
Northern Michigan University sophomore Melissa Apodaca (Chugiak, Alaska) came in second in the 63- kilogram weight class with a tournament record of 5-1.
Apodaca pinned Mayleen Soto in the second period and followed up that up with wins over April Ritts, 5-0, 3-0 and Stephanie Geltmacher 3-2, 1-0.
That vaulted Apodaca into the gold medal match against Trinity Plessigner. There, Apodaca lost 3-1, 6-0.
For the true second-place match. Apodaca pinned Alli Ragan in the first period.
NMU sophomore Gabrielle Lord-Klein (Stevens Point, Wis.) finished fourth in the 67-kg weight class, getting pinned by Jennifer Page in the second period.
Lord-Klein won her first two matches 5-0, 2-0 and 2-1, 3-0 over Shelia McCabe and Lorrie Ramos, respectively.
Lord-Klein then lost to the tournament winner Adeline Gray on a pin, but battled back against Danielle Curlis, winning 1-0, 2-0, to earn a spot against Page in the third-place match.
