Miners’ Pakkanen takes ninth at high school state gymnastics finals

MARQUETTE - Sara Pakkanen of Negaunee finished in ninth place in the all-around competition at the state high school gymnastics finals sponsored by the Michigan High School Athletic Association on March 10 at Grand Rapids Kenowa Hills High School.

Pakkanen competed in Division I, which consists primarly of gymnasts who have previously competed at a high level outside of high school competition.

Pakkanen, a sophomore at Negaunee High School, is an exchange student who will be returning to Finland at the end of this school year. She hopes to return to the U.S. for college and more gymastics competition, according to people affiliated with the NHS team.

Pakkanen was the first Upper Peninsula gymnast to place in the state all-around, where she totaled 36.725 points on the four apparatuses - floor exercise, balance beam, vault and uneven bars.

With 42 competitors at the state meet, Pakkanen's highest individual event finish was seventh in both the floor, where she scored 9.425, and vault, with a 9.350 mark.

She was also eighth on the balance beam (9.350) and 17th on the bars (8.600).

A week earlier at state regional competition in Rockford, Pakkanen earned a 9.65 mark on the beam and earned a berth in the state finals on all four apparatuses.

Winning scores at the finals included 9.675 in the vault by Taylor Tepper of Kenowa Hills/Grandville, 9.700 on the bars by Christine Wilson of Grand Ledge, 9.800 on the floor by Ashley Moskal of Troy Athens/Avondale, 9.625 on the beam by Tepper, and 38.400 in the all-around by Wilson.
