Pair of Killer Whales national qualifiers

BROWN DEER, Wis. - Two Marquette-area Killer Whales swimmers qualified for the YMCA national championships and another nabbed a third-place finish at the Wisconsin and Upper Michigan state championships held last weekend.

The YMCA of Marquette County team finished 14th overall, as its 13-14 year-old boys and 9-10 girls each placed sixth in their respective age groups.

Brandon Stedman, 18, qualified for the national meet in the 50-yard freestyle by finishing in 22.21 seconds, good for eighth place. He also qualified in the 100 breaststroke (:59.39, fourth place) and 200 breast (2:11.40, sixth).

Kelly McCommons, 18, qualified in the 100 breast in 1:01.17, which was eighth.

Meanwhile, Nathan Rotundo led the team's 13-14 boys by coming in third in the 200 breast in 2:22.89, fourth in the 400 individual medley (4:44.75), eighth in the 100 breast (1:06.29) and ninth in the 200 IM (2:13.73), setting team records in each event.
