NMU swimmer breaks school mark

MANSFIELD, Texas Junior Gaby Alzaga set a school record Friday at the 2012 NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championship in Mansfield, Texas.

Alzaga broke the school record in the 100-yard backstroke on with a time of 57.21 in the preliminary round. She finished 16th in the event and scored the lone Wildcat team point.

"Gaby swam very well," NMU coach Heidi Voigt said.

"We're hoping to finish strong (today) in the final day."

NMU teammate and freshman Emily Brennan swam during the first two days of competition.

She finished 42nd on Wednesday in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:10.29.

Thursday, Brennan swam the 400 IM, placing 30th in 4:39.63.

"Both swimmers have one race (today) and are gaining some great experience at this level that will help them in the future," Voigt said.

Alzaga will swim the 200 backstroke today and Brennan the 200 breaststroke.
