FINDLAY, Ohio - The No. 15-ranked Northern Michigan University track and field team fell short of finishing in the top three at the 2012 GLIAC Indoor Track and Field Championships over the weekend, winding up seventh with 43.75 points behind Grand Valley State, Ashland, Findlay, Hillsdale, Saginaw Valley and Tiffin.

Still, head coach Tom Barnes was happy with his team's performance at the meet, especially since the Wildcats broke three school records, had an automatic qualifier for nationals and four provisional qualifiers.

"We had a real good day on Saturday," Barnes said. "Just about everybody had a season or personal best this weekend."

Redshirt freshman Sherice Hewett was named the top freshman in the women's meet, along with Leslie Mitchell of Lake Superior State.

Hewett was the lone Wildcat to capture a conference championship. She beat out senior teammate Bailey Franklin's GLIAC-record leap in the triple jump. Her leap of 42 feet, 2 inches qualified her for nationals. She is also a provisional qualifier in the 60-meter hurdles.

Senior Catherine Angeli of Marquette finished fourth in the 200-meter dash with a school-record time of 25.18 seconds. She is a provisional qualifier for nationals.

Three Wildcats are heading to the NCAA Division II national meet in Mankato, Minn., on March 9-10, including Jamie Roberts in the pole vault, Bailey Franklin in the high jump and Sherice Hewett in the triple jump. More Wildcats who have reached provisional marks may be selected at a later date.
