January 30, 2012
By KYLE WHITNEY - Journal Staff Writer (kwhitney@miningjournal.net) , The Mining Journal

MARQUETTE - Approximately 1,700 people in the Sawyer area were without power for much of the morning, as Upper Peninsula Power Company officials attempted to determine the cause of the outage.

An UPPCO spokesman said the outage occurred shortly after 7 a.m. and was traced to a downed line in the area. UPPCO is contracted to repair the transmission lines, which are owned by American Transmission Company.

The interruption caused a total loss of power to the Sawyer substation. It was estimated power would be restored by 10:30 or 11 a.m.

Kyle Whitney can be reached at 906-228-2500, ext. 250.
