Wintry mix leads to closures, cancellations across region

MARQUETTE - A mixture of freezing rain and snow caused slippery conditions for drivers this morning as well as the cancellation of many area schools and events.

Cold air wrapping behind a strong low pressure system has caused all the Marquette area to see some snowfall this morning. "We did see plenty of freezing drizzle and sleet last night which caused icy surfaces on the roads," said Todd Kluber, meteorologist for the National Weather Service's office in Negaunee Township.

Temperatures were just below freezing this morning, Kluber said, adding that the temperature will remain steady through the day, dropping quickly overnight to a low of 20 degrees.

"The snow will be very wet," Kluber said.

Because of poor driving conditions, the following schools, townships and centers have been closed for the day:

Chocolay Township, Marquette Senior Center activities, Marquette Area Public Schools, Father Marquette, Polaris Middle School, North Star Academy, Negaunee Public Schools, NICE Community Schools, Ishpeming Public School District, Christ the King Preschool in Ishpeming, Gwinn Area Community Schools, Superior Central, Powell Township, Bay College in both Iron Mountain and Escanaba campuses, Marquette-Alger Regional Educational Services Agency and Northern Michigan University. NMU has yet to make a decision on evening classes at presstime.
