EBEN - Superior Central put together a big-scoring fourth quarter, then put the clamps down on defense in overtime to outlast Rapid River, 67-63, in a girls basketball game played Friday evening.
The Cougars remained perfect this season - 8-0 overall and 5-0 in the Central Upper Peninsula Conference - while the Rockets evened their record at 3-3 and 2-2.
Trailing 44-38 after three quarters, SC scored 23 points in the fourth quarter, capped off by a 3-pointer by sophomore Vanessa Freberg with about 90 seconds to go, according to Cougars coach Greg Trowbridge.
"Her 3 put us up by two points, then Rapid River made a couple free throws about a minute later that sent it to overtime," he said.
SC managed just six points in OT, but it more than enough after it gave up just two to Rapid River in the extra period. The Cougars iced the win when sophomore Teslyn Tyner hit two free throws with around 10 seconds left.
Freberg finished with game highs of 29 points and nine rebounds, while senior teammate Jamie Seppanen added 14 points and Tyner had 12 points and four steals.
RR was paced by Heather Sanderson with 22 points, while Kelly Bittner added 17, and Neena Brockway had six points and a team-high eight rebounds.
SC also won the JV game, 46-39.
