Famous August Hollywood Birthdays

August is often a slow month for movies. The summer movie rush is usually winding down and the fall Oscar season has yet to begin. I thought it would be interesting to take a look at people in the film industry who were born in the month of August.

Peter O'Toole was born on Aug. 2, 1932. O'Toole has the dubious honor of being the biggest loser in Academy Awards history. He has been nominated a whopping eight times but has never taken home the Oscar. You can find perhaps his most well-known film, "Lawrence of Arabia," in the DVD section in the library.

Dustin Hoffman was born in 1937 on Aug. 8. This multiple Oscar winner has many movies at the library. One of his best performances was in the 1988 film "Rain Man." Hoffman plays Raymond, a high functioning autistic and won Best Actor.

Halle Berry's birthday is on Aug. 14, 1966. This former Miss USA runner-up has had a very successful acting career and is one of Hollywood's highest paid stars. She won Best Actress at the Oscars in 2001 for her role in "Monster's Ball."

Robert De Niro was born on Aug. 17, 1943. He is without a doubt one of the greatest American actors of all time. He has twice won Academy Awards and has numerous other nominations. Peter White has many De Niro films in its collection. One notable film is "The Deer Hunter," which was released in 1978 and won Best Picture.

Robert Redford is one of the biggest stars in Hollywood of the last half century. Redford, born on Aug. 18, 1936, is an accomplished actor, director and producer. Two of his greatest films can be found at Peter White. "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" might be Redford's most famous movie. "The Sting," which also starred Paul Newman, was released in 1973.

Richard Attenborough was born at the end of August on the 29th in 1923. He has a long career of acting character parts in movies, but has been most successful as a director and producer. The film, "Gandhi," was released in 1982, and Attenborough won Oscars for Best Director and Best Picture.

Because August is a slow month for movies, it can be hard to find something to watch. If you find yourself stuck this month with no movie ideas, come to the Peter White Public Library and try some of these films from people with August birthdays.
