The Mining Journal

MARQUETTE - The North Star Academy board will welcome a new member at today's meeting.

The board meets at 5:15 p.m. at the school on Wright Street in Marquette Township.

Roger Zappa, a local attorney and parent of a North Star elementary school student, is joining the board.

North Star CEO and Superintendent Karen Anderson said Zappa applied for the position and was approved through Northern Michigan University, which charters the academy.

Zappa will fill one of two empty seats on the board. Anderson said another person has applied, but is still going through the approval and interview process.

"It's recommended we have a good cross-section of parents and educators, as well as someone from NMU and a business person," she said.

In other action, the board is scheduled to approve the school's mission statement and consider updates to the school improvement plan.
