LAURIUM - When it comes to exercising, proper balance is of upmost importance.
Utilizing the four components of fitness; cardiorespiratory, muscular strength, muscular endurance and flexibility is the only way to properly work out.
"All of them are just as important as the next," said Katie Curtis, fitness coordinator of the Aspirus Keweenaw Fitness Center in Laurium. "All of them are important in a fitness program."
It may seem like quite a bit to a beginner, so Curtis said not to immediately look at the big picture.
"You can start with just one of them, maybe just walking 10 to 20 minutes," she said, highlighting the cardiorespiratory area. "As you get to feeling better you can increase that, or add in strength training."
Curtis said that's how most people will get started with their plans to get back in shape, because simply walking for 20 minutes will lead into walking for a half-hour, then using light weights for muscles and of course, stretching the body.
"Take small steps to avoid becoming overwhelmed," she said. "It's good to have all of this in a complete program, but for beginners you want to pick one and slowly add in the other parts."
