MARQUETTE - For the Bryants of Marquette, a good Christmas display is a family effort. Tim and Jill Bryant and their daughter Emily all helped out in decorating their yard on West Ohio Street with lights, cutouts and other elements this year.

Their hard work paid off. The Bryants were awarded first place in the Elfin Magic category of the Marquette Board of Light and Power's 2010 Lighting Contest.

"We like to decorate. It's like a living Christmas card to the neighborhood and the town," Jill Bryant said. "The kids near Sandy Knoll really enjoy the decorations and we get a lot of comments from them."

There are six different categories in the annual contest. Child's Bright Delight is for large displays, Frosty's Favorites is for medium displays, Elfin Magic is for small displays, Rudolph's Rookies is for first time entrants, North Pole Neighborhood is for groups of homes and Winner's Circle is a best of the best contest among previous first-place winners.

John and Stacey Carter's home on Vandenboom Avenue won first place in the Child's Bright Delight category.

"We've been doing it for a number of years and we just keep building on to what we have every year. We like to keep kids in mind because we think that Christmas is all about kids," Stacey Carter said.

The BLP awards $250 for first place in each category, $200 for second, $150 for third and $100 for honorable mention.
