3 Wise Men: Not just for Christmas any more

December 18, 2010
By DANIELLE PEMBLE Journal Staff Writer

The 3 Wise Men is all about three guys jumping around and having fun, said guitar player Walt Lindala, who, joined by drummer "Doc" Donald Thoma, and bassist Mark Johnson form 3 Wise Men.

"Everybody (in the band) is a veteran," said Lindala, "We've been around the block enough times that ideas come pretty freely."

All the band members have been playing music for many years, so they have all developed an ear for listening to each other, improvising, and working together.

Lindala and Johnson are familiar with playing music together, as they are both part of the better-known regional band, the Flat Broke Blues Band.

Thoma, of the group Loose Gravel, joined together with the two when they all decided to play at a benefit to help veterans in December of 2007. Since they were all experienced musicians, and it was Christmas time, Lindala suggested they be named 3 Wise Men.

Due to fans asking them to play more shows, they decided to play more benefits over the last three years.

Now with the busy festival season behind The Flat Broke Blues band, and the dissolve of Loose Gravel in July 2010, the three decided to begin writing and performing music as a working band.

Together the three play music stemming from guitar-driven blues, classic 80's concert rock and "some jamming stuff" too, said Thoma. They try to play songs that everyone enjoys, including songs influenced by Buddy Guy, ZZ Top, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton and Robin Trower.

The best part about the band is the fun they have playing together, said Lindala.

"It's a no pressure kind of thing, something enjoyable," he said, " If we can have fun, have a couple laughs and make some bucks doing it, why not."

You can ring in the new year with music by The 3 Wise Men at Tony's Whitefish Inn in Curtis, Mich. starting at 9:30 p.m. The will also be playing at the Wooden Nickel in Marquette in January.
