Helen Makela

MARQUETTE - Helen (Kiukas) Makela, age 94, passed away Thursday morning, November 11, 2010, at the Mather Nursing Center, in the loving and comforting presence of her family and the caregivers of Lake Superior Hospice. She had resided at the Mather Nursing Center since 2004.

Born September 9, 1916 in North Lake to Daniel and Hilda (Kuuttinen) Kiukas, she was a lifelong area resident. On October 23, 1937, she married Unto Makela and he predeceased her in 1982. Helen was currently a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Gwinn. She previously was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Marquette where she served as custodian for many years.

Survivors include her daughter, Ruth (Ronald) Hill of Marquette; a son, Paul (Pat) Makela of Gwinn; five grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; four nieces; and several cousins living in Finland.

In addition to her parents and husband, Helen was predeceased by a brother, Donald Kiukas; and a sister, Ruth Hooper.

Friends may call at the Grace Lutheran Church in Gwinn on Tuesday, November 16, beginning at 10:00 am. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon Tuesday with Rev. George Candea-Kromm officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be her great-grandchildren, Brian, Benjamin, Jon, Melissa, and Courtney Hill, Jessica Miilu, Joel and Dan Fowler, Haley and Chase Ashby. Burial will be made in the Northland Chapel Gardens.

Because of her love of animals, the family requests that in lieu of flowers, to consider a contribution to the Marquette County Humane Society in her name, 84 Snowfield Road, Negaunee, MI 49866.

The family extends a sincere thank you to the staff of the Mather Nursing Center and Lake Superior Hospice for their care and concern of Mom during these past years. It is truly appreciated.
