To the Journal editor:
I would like everyone to know about North Star Academy's first ever scholastics sports team. Recently they started a cross country team with 12 students ranging from sixth through 12th grade.
Not too many of these kids have ever participated in organized sports before this. They only had half the season to prepare for their meets, but they did great.
Lots of people have written these kids off: "Why can't they go to public schools?" North Star is a public school.
They are chartered by Northern Michigan University and have to meet all the state requirements that other schools require. Sometimes you really need to look into something before you make a decision in your mind about a group of people. These are good kids with bright and prosperous futures.
I would like to personally thank Coach Bill Sved for his dedication to these kids and their school. To Karen Anderson, CEO, for believing in the kids and making this a reality.
And to all the kids who participated in this program, it will be with you forever. Great job, you guys. Your families and school are very proud of you and your accomplishments.
