For nearly 14 years I have been privileged to represent various parts of the Upper Peninsula in the state legislature. I've seen a lot of issues and votes in those years. Some were perfectly logical, while some caused me to really scratch my head. The vote that puzzled and bothered me the most was when Tom Casperson voted to close the prisons in Newberry and Manistique and to slash NMU's funding by 30 percent.
In all the years I've served in Lansing the U.P. delegation always stood together when it came to protecting the U.P., regardless of party affiliation. When asked why he voted that way Tom replied, "It's only a bargaining chip." Families and students in the U.P. should not be used as bargaining chips. Since Tom later went to work full time for the Michigan Republican Party it is easy to see where his loyalty really lies. Mike Lahti would never turn his back on the people of the U.P. that way. He consistently stands up for the people of his district, not his party. That's one big reason I'm voting for Mike.
