The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act

October 27, 2010
The Mining Journal

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, "Obamacare," causes a massive growth of government, a further dismantling of the private sector and hiring of thousands of new public sector employees to staff a multitude of new departments. Truth is found in simplicity. This 2,000-plus page bill, unread before passage, still not fully understood and with a regulatory open door for unelected bureaucrats will lead to progressive intrusion into the patient-physician relationship. Increasing micro management replaces the freedom of individual choice.

The publicly unpopular bill was passed using distasteful "smoke-filled" backroom deals, procedural ploys, sinful budgetary contrivances and stretching constitutional interpretation. A moderately priced, relatively small federal program could have offered the uninsured a basic medical plan. The $500 billion dollar gutting of Medicare for creation of yet another entitlement with governmental dominance over 16 percent of GDP and an unacceptable tradeoff of diminished personal freedom for growth of the welfare state was unnecessary.

This bill encompasses the deception, lack of transparency, fiscal irresponsibility, constitutional marginalization, expansion of the welfare state, furtherance of the entitlement financial nightmare, growth of government and compromise of personal freedom that reinforces the degradation of trust in government. The negative impact on the patient-physician relationship will undo the best health care system in history.

Dr. Dan Benishek's admirable positions related to these abominations must be enthusiastically supported. We should be thankful that men of character have the passion and energy to get this wonderful country back on track. Dr. Benishek has my admiration for his decision to engage in such a positive way at such a crucial time. The American people can be trusted to vote for limited government in November.
