Marquette recognized by Forbes

Third best small city in the nation to raise a family

MARQUETTE - Marquette is the third best small city in America to raise a family, according to Forbes.com.

To determine its rankings, Forbes looked at 126 cities with populations less than 100,000 and ranked each city on commute time, high school graduation rate, median household income, home ownership rate and cost of living.

"We've been fortunate to garner a lot of awards in the recent past, but this one to me really represents what we've been trying to accomplish, which is a community people want to live and raise their kids in," Mayor John Kivela said. "To be named number three in the United States is just an incredible accomplishment. I'm very proud of the community."

He said the designation will attract employers and families to the area.

"When people are looking to move their company or to move their family and they see that this is one of the best small cities in the country to live, I think that means a lot," he said.

Forbes bestowed the designation on the city of Marquette but Kivela said the distinction belongs to the entire area, including the surrounding townships.

"We're all one Marquette, that's the way I feel about it," he said.

Marquette ranked 24th in commute time, 12th in high school graduation rate, 35th in median household income, 31st in home ownership rate and 13th in cost of living.
