To the Journal Editor:
Anyone who takes the time to familiarize themselves with the positions of the candidates for whom we have the opportunity to vote must be appalled and disappointed over Gary McDowell's television ad grossly misstating Dr. Benishek's position on Social Security. Apparently, Mr. McDowell and the Democrat party are attempting to scare our voters, particularly our seniors who are nearing or are receiving Social Security. A man who knowingly lies about an opponent to gain votes cannot be trusted to represent the people that elected him.
Big spending has put Social Security at a greater risk. Every year it gets worse - Democrats and Republicans are using the trust fund as a piggy bank. Guess what? This event initially happened when President Johnson and a Democrat-controlled House and Senate moved Social Security from an independent fund to the general fund, increased the taxes on Social Security as well as extending benefits to immigrants who never paid a dime into the system.
Keep in mind that it's our current Democrat Congress that cut $500 billion from Medicare, which was passed this year in the 2,500 page health care bill. Who can we trust? The politician who distorts, lies, and panders to those who are most vulnerable? No, we need leaders who hear beyond their own inner voice of self-praise, discern a wise course when it's presented and respond accordingly. I believe that Dr. Benishek has this kind of leadership and, with a newly elected Congress representing "we the people," can and will deal seriously with controlling this wild expansion of government and its out of control spending that's being thrust upon us.
