Disgusted by ad

September 15, 2010
The Mining Journal

I felt disgusted when I saw the newest attack ad on Dan Benishek by the Democrat Congressional Committee. I assume they want Gary McDowell to win the 1st District, and I'm sure they think we are a bunch of hicks and rubes up here in the sticks, but people like Nancy Pelosi and Barney Frank and company should be informed that we have been paying attention.

The ad tries to scare seniors by noting that Benishek favors privatizing Social Security, but does not say that he is adamantly against changing a thing for current recipients. Benishek notes, "I do not favor any reduction, freeze, or changes in the benefits provided existing retirees. This is a promise made to those over the age of 62 by their government, and it must be honored 100 percent. No ifs, ands, or buts. Period."

The ad also does not tell the voters that Gary McDowell wants to increase payroll taxes to fill any shortfalls with Social Security and Medicare. Unfortunately, this approach is a jobs killer, and is not a long-term solution.

People who are in their 40s and younger have, for a long time, considered that they are paying into a system that will not be there for them when they are in their 60s. It makes sense to offer them a way to take control of their own earnings and control over their retirement.
