ISHPEMING — In a budget-reducing move, the Ishpeming Public Schools Board of Education voted to privatize custodial services at Ishpeming High School and Birchview Elementary School during a meeting Monday, eliminating four jobs in the district. The board also voted to shutter C.L. Phelps Middle School halfway through the school year to create additional savings. Both decisions passed unanimously. Privatizing jobs at Ishpeming High School will save the district about $84,000 and eliminate three full time positions. At Birchview, it will eliminate one 10-month position and save about $11,000. The district will now contract services out to Grand Rapids-based company Hi-Tec. The changes would be effective Jan. 1.
