By CLAIRE ABENT Journal Staff Writer

MARQUETTE - The North Star Academy board learned at Wednesday's meeting that enrollment has climbed by more than 30 students this year.

CEO Karen Anderson said as of student count day, North Star's enrollment was at 230 students, which compares to 196 at this time last year.

The board was also informed that academy students fair better than the average on the Michigan Merit Exam.

"The results showed that the longer the students are at North Star Academy, the better they score," Anderson said. "The AYP (adequate yearly progress) students exceed the local and state averages."

In other business, the board:

Approved having Anderson work with the Northern Michigan University Charter Schools Office to revise the school charter based on the addition of the academy's elementary school.

Approved the 2010-2011 curriculum guide and student handbook for the middle and high school levels.

Approved board policy updates that were needed to meet legal recommendations from the National Institutes of Charter Schools.

Approved hiring a food service coordinator.
